Goldfish Goldfish Ponds

Jamie Boyle The Goldfish Guy

Well that’s me, my name is Jamie Boyle also known as The Goldfish Guy and that is my nickname that people have been calling me for a long time now. For years now all my family and friends have called me The Goldfish Guy ever since I got into the hobby.

To let you all know I started in the goldfish hobby about 10+ years ago now. It all started for me while I was in school really and gained interest in goldfish and koi. I first started off with a 33 gallon tank myself, you know with a few goldfish to start. Then as I got more into aquariums and fish I got bigger tanks and more goldfish and koi fish to add to my aquariums.

The turning point for me was when I built a water garden pond in my parents backyard years ago now, pretty much the same time I got started into the hobby. This was the very first fish pond I have ever built and my father and I built it. I have to tell you building your pond yourself is fun, yes it’s work but very rewarding and you get to build it as you like. If people build their own water garden pond I suggest doing it yourself, the hobby is suppose to be fun, and seeing the job done when your finished is very rewarding like I said. Your pond is your art work, your work and your masterpiece in which you will enjoy for years to come.

I am going to show you the picture of our very first pond that we built below. This is pretty much when my nickname The Goldfish Guy originated from as my hobby with aquariums, goldfish, koi and water lilies all happened around the same time.

I tell you one thing the best way to learn things is by hands on experience. Now this garden pond was done over 10 years ago now, we definitely learned things in the process. Now it’s full with water lilies, goldfish, shubunkins, koi and butterfly koi. I love water plants and it definitely adds beauty and colour to your pond.

Well this is how my nickname The Goldfish Guy came from. I don’t mind at all it’s something I truly enjoy and have a passion for. Since then I have made my hobby into a business as well. The name our business is Country Koi Fish Farm operated by myself Jamie and my father Danny in which we started together after building our first pond pretty much. Having this job is not a job at all as it’s something I really enjoy doing so I don’t consider it work really. You can call it my dream job as you have to love what you do for a living. So I my goldfish hobby turned into a business in which I sell goldfish, shubunkins, sarassa comets, koi, butterfly koi and a few other types of goldfish as well. On top of that I sell aquatic plants like the water lily, Yellow Flag Water Iris and a few other water plants as well. So now you have a little bit of information on how I got into the goldfish hobby.

How about yourself? When did you get into the hobby, how long and when did it all start for you keeping goldfish? What was your first goldfish? Please leave a comment and please share, love to know how it all started for other people and what got them hooked on goldfish.

Sincerely,

Hope you can help! My fantail goldfish periodically develops a very small lump on one side. It all causes it to swim at a tilt. The lump comes and goes but it is becoming more frequent (monthly).
Any idea what it is? Treatment?
Thanks Jamie

Hi Dee,

Anyway you can send me a picture. Sometimes they can develop like pimples which is a fluid build up under the skin. It does come and go. The only thing you need to watch out for is if those lumps end up having a threadlike worm hanging from it known as anchor worm. Then you will need to treat it to kill off the parasites.

How big is this lump that your fantail goldfish has?

Get back to me so I can further help you. Oh by the way have you tested your water quality lately?

Talk to you soon,

Jamie Boyle

HELP! I think you are the only one who can help us… here's the skinny:

We have two goldfish. One was won at a fair 3 years ago – he's fine. The other we bought last year from a store. Initially small – now he is huge! Massive! Anyways, the last time my husband cleaned the tank, when we put him back in he was all bent, breathing fast and I thought he wouldn't make it through the night. My husband forgot the tap water treatment, so I quickly bought some and added it. He made it through the night, but then started floating straight up and down, head down and his tail is bent at a near 90 degree angle. We started wondering if maybe he "broke" his tail (if that's possible) when my husband transferred him since he is a moose. For a few days he started looking better, now he is looking worse again and tail more bent. He is eating. But I don't know what is wrong with him or how to help. As I said our other fish is fine… I thought maybe swim bladded, so I starved him, even gave him peas. Didn't seem to make a difference. Can you help our poor fish? Our boys will be heartbroken if he doesn't make it.

Thanks for your help!

hey there. I found your blog and thought I'd ask my question on my godlfish. First, a small history: I ahve two small common goldfish, originaly I ahd them in a bowl, but after reading that its bad for them, I moved them in an aquarium witha filter-that was a few days ago. Since then, I noticed that one of my two fish has black spots on one of its side. I read that those can be healing spots but I want to make sure: heres an image of him with the spots: http://s333.photobucket.com/albums/m394/Poseidon_Simons/?action=view&current=blackspots.jpg and also the aquarium I have now: http://s333.photobucket.com/albums/m394/Poseidon_Simons/?action=view&current=aquarium.jpg

btw, it's me again. Is there a way you can tell if it's a male or a female by that picture??

hey jamie! my name is Christine and i have done a ton of research and i always end back at your postings to help me!!! I REALLY NEED HELP NOW!!!! i have a 3 1/2" or so fancy goldfish i've had him for a year now and it breaks my heart that i can't fix him. He's always had an issue with swim bladder then i fix it he gets better my husband and i bought him a 10 gallon tank then made the mistake of getting 2 other small goldfish i already know that's not enough room for all of them so i'm going to get a bigger tank real soon. my goldie started with a tiny knick on his body where he was missing few scales i think it's because of the new decoration he got hurt then he started getting black around the mouth like a ring of black then one on his gill then 2 or 3 on his fins. i heard that was ammonia burn so i changed the water and monitored it he seemed fine but then everything went bad. the black moor started picking on him so i put goldie in a separate tank away from everyone else. he's in a gallon tank with an air pump and air stone i keep it really clean because there's no filter for this hospital tank. 3 days into treatment with melafix everyday like it says on the bottle and he started almost acting like himself again he got excited to eat and i fed him 2 sinking pellets he ate them. this morning i woke up he was belly up he's trying to swim so hard to not be like that then gives up. he has shallow breaths but can stay at the top of the water up right sometimes. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!! i'm so sad i'm going to loose him and can't feel like i didn't do everything in my power to save him!!!!!! the black spots are still there not worse he also had red streaks in all his fins and they were shredded his fins seem a little better actually. i added a tiny pinch of kosher salt because it said if you didn't have aquarium salt to use kosher and i did i warmed up the water a little bit but i don't have a heater i'm going to get one today! please tell me what else i can do for him!

Hi Goldfish Guy,
I am desperate! My poor goldfish is dying and I don't know what to do. I have searched your blog and can not find a disease that fits my fish's symptoms. I am trying to treat him with no luck.
He is floating at the top of a "hospital tank" on his side. His tail is white (corpse like looking) his tail fins are frayed, he has a hemmorage behind his eye, and most of his body looks like his skin is peeling off. The skin that is this way is white also. Kind of like what a human looks like with a peeling sunburn. His breathing is normal to slightly faster than normal. He does not move his rear extremities at all only using his side fins.
I expected to come out to find him dead 2 days ago, but he is still living. He is only a $0.19 goldfish, but I don't want him to die. I also don't want him to suffer. I CAN NOT bring myself to kill him. That just isn't my belief.
Please help!! I looked all over to try and find a way to send you pictures of him, but couldn't figure out where else to contact you.

Hi Susan,

Send me a picture of your goldfish at jamieboyle100 (at)hotmail.com

I'll take a look and get back to you right away.

Hi Goldfish guy
My fish seemed to flip himself out of the pond….I don't think a bird did it. I found him 2 feet from the pond, in the full sun, totally dry, not moving at all and covered in flies. I put him straight back in the pond and after what seemed an age, he took his first breath and s-l-o-w-l-y recovered. Over the next few days some green algae grew on the skin, but most of that has peeled off. Now, more than a week later, he has sunburn on one complete side of his body (light orange rather than deep orange), and his tail has fallen off completely, apart from just a minute bit at the base. He still has all his fins working, spends a lot of time just drifting, has been eating ok. His body is very bloated now, I have a bad feeling he is constipated, there was a whitish blob hanging at his back passage which I've removed. Anything else I can do for him? I'm a bit worried any disease he may have may spread in the water, so I've separated him from the other fish into a metal bowl on his own. Added a pinch of salt to the water, hoping that would have some healing properties.

The other fish has been super at trying to encourage him all the time, not attack him at all. After surviving so long after his sunbathe, really hoping he doesn't die now.

Surprised how much his "rescue" affected me…KP

HI Goldfish Guy, I have a small goldfish that has been happy on his own. A friend is moving overseas and asked me to take on her goldfish who is a bit bigger. I have them both in the same bowl now and the big one is pestering my original little one. Any ideas? Thanks Amelia
