Jamie Boyle The Goldfish Guy

Well that’s me, my name is Jamie Boyle also known as The Goldfish Guy and that is my nickname that people have been calling me for a long time now. For years now all my family and friends have called me The Goldfish Guy ever since I got into the hobby.

Jamie Boyle The Goldfish Guy
Jamie Boyle The Goldfish Guy

To let you all know I started in the goldfish hobby about 10+ years ago now. It all started for me while I was in school really and gained interest in goldfish and koi. I first started off with a 33 gallon tank myself, you know with a few goldfish to start. Then as I got more into aquariums and fish I got bigger tanks and more goldfish and koi fish to add to my aquariums.

The turning point for me was when I built a water garden pond in my parents backyard years ago now, pretty much the same time I got started into the hobby. This was the very first fish pond I have ever built and my father and I built it. I have to tell you building your pond yourself is fun, yes it’s work but very rewarding and you get to build it as you like. If people build their own water garden pond I suggest doing it yourself, the hobby is suppose to be fun, and seeing the job done when your finished is very rewarding like I said. Your pond is your art work, your work and your masterpiece in which you will enjoy for years to come.

I am going to show you the picture of our very first pond that we built below. This is pretty much when my nickname The Goldfish Guy originated from as my hobby with aquariums, goldfish, koi and water lilies all happened around the same time.

I tell you one thing the best way to learn things is by hands on experience. Now this garden pond was done over 10 years ago now, we definitely learned things in the process. Now it’s full with water lilies, goldfish, shubunkins, koi and butterfly koi. I love water plants and it definitely adds beauty and colour to your pond.

Well this is how my nickname The Goldfish Guy came from. I don’t mind at all it’s something I truly enjoy and have a passion for. Since then I have made my hobby into a business as well. The name our business is Country Koi Fish Farm operated by myself Jamie and my father Danny in which we started together after building our first pond pretty much. Having this job is not a job at all as it’s something I really enjoy doing so I don’t consider it work really. You can call it my dream job as you have to love what you do for a living. So I my goldfish hobby turned into a business in which I sell goldfish, shubunkins, sarassa comets, koi, butterfly koi and a few other types of goldfish as well. On top of that I sell aquatic plants like the water lily, Yellow Flag Water Iris and a few other water plants as well. So now you have a little bit of information on how I got into the goldfish hobby.

How about yourself? When did you get into the hobby, how long and when did it all start for you keeping goldfish? What was your first goldfish? Please leave a comment and please share, love to know how it all started for other people and what got them hooked on goldfish.

How Fast Do Goldfish Grow

How fast do goldfish grow is a question on every ones mind. Goldfish growth really depends on certain factors that will influence how fast they will grow. Some factors that directly influence goldfish growth is:

1. How clean is the water for your Goldfish?
2. How big is the environment, goldfish bowl, goldfish aquarium or goldfish pond?
3. What kind of goldfish food are you feeding your fish?
4. The genetics (DNA) of the goldfish parents passed on to their offspring.

How fast do goldfish grow is really a tough question to answer really. As mentioned above these factors will influence the growth potential of your goldfish. For example the how clean your water is impacts how fast they will grow. If the water is too clear then lacks algae and food to feed on. Second if water quality is not kept up with proper maintenance causes stress on goldfish which may impact the goldfish desire to eat. If goldfish don’t eat, they don’t grow, therefore growing slower then normal.

The environment or home for your goldfish plays a big part on how fast goldfish will grow as well. For instance if you put a goldfish in a goldfish bowl it won’t grow as much as it would if it were in an aquarium or garden pond. The environment plays a major part in goldfish growth. Goldfish will only grow to the size of their environment in which it can handle. Also the more space a goldfish has will help increase the size of your goldfish and won’t stunt your goldfish from growing. When goldfish have big aquariums or tanks to grow in it will make less maintenance for you and much happier goldfish. Another reason goldfish grow faster in larger environments is there is more food readily available to eat. There is always food in an aquarium to eat for goldfish especially in ponds. Goldfish will grow fast due to abundance of algae to eat and also the live microscopic animals and insects to feed on. Goldfish basically have a buffet at anytime they want with the amount of food they will find to eat living in ponds. Goldfish will grow extremely fast as well if the water is green like pea soup or they are grown in mud ponds. You will see your goldfish grow fast.

The goldfish food that you feed them plays a part in their growth as well. If you want your goldfish to grow fast consider feeding them a wide variety of food. Also high growth food will help as well maximizing the growth of your goldfish. You can also feed them several times a day just make sure they eat all the goldfish food that you give them within 2 minutes other then that discard uneaten food as it will foul your water. Goldfish food will play a part in their growth as well.

So to really answer the question, “How Fast Do Goldfish Grow” really has too many factors to really answer. Also genetics plays a part in this as well. If you look at some people today some are skinny, some are large, medium, petite, tall and short. Everyone grows differently and the same goes for goldfish. For example I’m 6’4″ while my parents are like 5’6″ so I grew taller. Usually if you come from a tall family you will have tall kids which happens most times through DNA passed on to kids. So goldfish genetics and DNA sometimes will impact how fast goldfish grow as well. Really a question with no true answer but definitely things people can do to grow goldfish faster by doing several things. Biggest thing that will help grow your goldfish fast is give them the space they deserve don’t confine goldfish to small tanks go bigger and you will have bigger goldfish.

Taking Care Of A Goldfish Bowl

The first step into having goldfish is to have a home for it whether it be a goldfish bowl or goldfish aquarium and learn how to begin taking care of your new pet. Goldfish bowls are an excellent gift for your kids and they will love taking care of goldfish, their new friend. The only thing is with small goldfish bowls they do require more work and maintenance then a regular aquarium or tank would. Goldfish bowls are not the ideal home though when taking care of goldfish.

Why are goldfish bowls more work then goldfish aquariums?

Well that’s easy! The thing is a goldfish bowl has no filter, and has no air pump as well. So taking care of a goldfish in a bowl will be more work. What you will need to do in this case, you will need to keep an eye out on your goldfish more often. The less water that your goldfish have to live in the more work is required.

Goldfish bowls - Kids Taking Care of Goldfish

Goldfish Bowls Water Quality

Some things you should do in taking care of a goldfish bowl is to perform regular water changes to keep water clean and healthy for your fish. Also when performing water changes make sure you add chlorine remover to the new freshwater your putting in. You should also make sure the temperature of the water your adding in is equal to the temperature of the water inside the bowl. Shocking goldfish with a sudden change in temperature can result in goldfish diseases, sickness and even death. The general rule of thumb is try not to go more then a degree over or under and make it as close as possible. Another thing to do is check the water chemistry in your goldfish bowl frequently as things can turn for the worse quickly when you have less water, no filtration and no air pump. Water quality checks are very important when taking care of goldfish bowls.

Having a goldfish bowl for beginners are great. Just need to be a little more cautious thats all. Goldfish are a dirty fish and they can foul up your water in no time if left unchecked. Goldfish eat and it pretty much comes out the other end right away. By performing regular goldfish bowl maintenance you should be safe and your goldfish healthy.

Goldfish bowls like I said are great for beginners and kids but only good for one fish really. If your like me I would like to see more goldfish then one swimming around. So the prefect question you and others should ask themselves before getting into hobby is “Goldfish bowl or Goldfish Aquarium -Tank?” What are the pros and cons and how much time you really want to spend taking care of goldfish? One last little goldfish advice or tip if you have any cats, try and keep them away or your new little friend might just be lunch 🙂

***** Goldfish bowls are too small for goldfish really and should not be kept in them, if person does decide to do this as their own choice be careful and take proper care of them. Goldfish bowls are just plain too small, would you like to be confined in a small area??? Goldfish need space to live and be healthy.********

Why Are My Goldfish Not Eating?

There are many reasons why goldfish may not be eating and there are certain things people should do to take care of their goldfish and make sure they’re okay.

Here are several reasons why your goldfish may not be eating:

1. Poor water quality, polluted water- make sure test the water
2. Water chemistry such as PH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate may be off the scale, check levels
3. Filter may be dirty, causing stress and poor conditions resulting in fish not eating.
4. There may be dead goldfish in the tank causing bad conditions resulting in fish not eating.
5. Goldfish may have disease or illness’s resulting in lack of interest for food and eating. Sickness is one of the top reasons why goldfish don’t eat. Pretty much the same as humans, when we’re sick the thought of food doesn’t interest us.
6. Food may be old or stale, lack of nutrients.
7. Goldfish may be showing lack of interest in the same food, try feeding your goldfish a different food.
8. Make sure there is no chlorine in the water, make sure you always add AquaPlus Water conditioner when performing water changes.
9. There may be an organic matter build up in your aquarium. Make you stir up the aquarium gravel with a aquarium gravel cleaner to make sure aquarium bed is clean.
10. Your goldfish do sleep, maybe there resting and full resulting in lack of interest in eating.
11. If you’ve recently purchased goldfish from a pet store, they still may be getting used the their new surroundings. Usually it may take a day or two to get used to their new surroundings as stress is a big reason why as well goldfish are not eating.

By cross elimination you can figure out why your goldfish may not be eating. Once you’ve determined why they’re not eating, fix the situation and they will begin eating right away. Usually its something simple. Think about it, would we like eating the same food everyday, same goes for goldfish. Offer your goldfish a variety of different foods to make sure they stay healthy.

Do Goldfish Sleep?

Goldfish indeed do sleep and is often a question people always want to know. Sleeping goldfish is not the same as for us cuddling to a pillow under warm blankets. Goldfish sleep basically in one spot. They hover with periodic movements to keep stable and are often seen hiding behind aquarium decorations or close to the bottom of your aquarium. When fish sleep they are very much at alert at all times. Goldfish sleeping is actually a form of resting and are aware what’s going on at all times. You will see golfish suddenly swim erradically when you turn the aquarium light on. They much like us, they were startled and are seeking a place to hide.

Goldfish need sleep just like humans. Without enough sleep we can get sick and same goes for them. People should have a regular schedule for aquarium lighting or better yet have it on a timer so it’s on for a certain amount each day. Your light should be on for about 12 hours a day or less. A good suggestion to do is turn on the light when you get up and when you go to sleep turn it off. When you shut the light off you will notice that the your fish will begin to slow down and relax. If you leave the light on all the time, it’s not good for goldfish health as they will not have much of a resting period. Goldfish have no eye lids so shut off the light so they can get a good night sleep. Goldfish need sleep and it’s much easier to sleep with the lights off. Even if people do accidently leave the lights on, goldfish will sleep but it won’t be the same type of sleep as if they were off. Try and shut the lights off. Think of this would you like the lights on when your going to sleep? Same goes for them.

Also when goldfish sleep their colour also fades. So whenever you go an observe your goldfish and you see them basically still and their colour is partially faded, well its a good chance their sleeping. Leave them alone so they get the well deserved rest they need.

Sincerely,

Jamie Boyle

Breeding Goldfish Goldfish Goldfish Care How To

Sexing Goldfish- Differences Between Males and Females

Goldfish sexing is what most aquarium or fish pond hobbyist would like to know sooner or later. Goldfish breeding is the answer why they want to know the differences between male and female goldfish. As people get more into their hobby they would eventually like to see their fish breed. Here I am going to tell you and show you how to tell if your goldfish are male or female.

How To Tell The Differences Between Male and Female Goldfish

Female Goldfish

1. Females are generally bigger then the males and are they’re more plump. The reason for this is that there abdomen is all full of eggs when it comes time to breeding.

2. Females abdomen is also more soft and squishy then of the males.

3. They also have rounded and shorter pectoral fins.

4. Females also have a larger rounder anal opening with it slightly protruding as well.

Male Goldfish

1. Male fish develop breeding tubercles on their gill plates which are most commonly mistaken for the goldfish disease commonly known as Ich. They also get these small white pimple like spots on their outer ridge of their pectoral fins as well. These breeding tubercles appear during spawning time showing they’re ready to breed.

2. Males also have larger longer pectoral fins as well. The pectoral fins are the ones right underneath their gills.

3. They also have a much firmer abdomen then the females.

4. Males have a smaller more oval anal opening then the females.

5. Males are more torpedo shape then females.

These are how to tell the differences between the sexes of male and female goldfish. Here is one of the biggest ways that you can tell as well is when breeding begins to happen you will see the males chasing the females. This is a sure way to tell the differences whether it’s a boy or girl. It’s much the same as real life dating the men usually chase the women 🙂 I will later add some goldfish photos of breeding tubercles of males and pictures of females as well for everyone to see the differences.

Breeding Goldfish Goldfish Goldfish Care Goldfish Diseases Ich White Spot Disease

Breeding Tubercles Not White Spot Disease (Ich)

A common mistake that goldfish owners make which is quite easily done is treating their fish for ich when in fact it’s breeding tubercles. On the photo above you’ll see breeding tubercles on this goldfish fantail Gill plates cover. Proper diagnosis in identifying diseases can save you time, money, and eliminate stress on fish. These breeding tubercles that you see appear like pimples on the gill plates. Lots of people mistaken this for ich when in fact it’s not.

Male goldfish develop these breeding tubercles several times throughout the year. This symbolizes that the goldfish are ready to breed. A good way to tell whether it’s ich or breeding tubercles is to observe the rest of the body. If the white spots or pimples are only on the the gill plates then they are breeding tubercles. If there are spots elsewhere that appear on your fish then you have ich. If it turns out to be ich then I would suggest getting ready to start treating your goldfish for whitespot disease.

Goldfish Goldfish Care Goldfish Diseases Goldfish Medications Ich Fish Treatment Ich White Spot Disease

Treatment For Ich or White Spot Disease In Goldfish

Treatment for white spot disease or ich in goldfish you can use Malachite green. This is a very effective ich treatment medication that you can buy at most pet stores or online as well. This ich treatment is safe for fish and aquatic plants and will eliminate this goldfish disease when done properly.

When using Melachite green for treating ich or white spot disease on goldfish there are several things you should do:

1. Always wear eye goggles
2. Use gloves when dealing with this chemical
3. Use with caution, chemical stains
4. Always store away from reach of children

Treatment process:

1. Medication should be added to the goldfish aquarium every 24 hrs. recommended by the label on bottle by the manufacturer.
2. Treatment should be done for a minimum of 10 days for excellent results to ensure all ich have been eliminated from your aquarium or fish pond.
3. Before each treatment do a 25% water change
4. Make sure you take out carbon in filter, if not it will take medication out of the water.
5. Make sure you keep a close eye on your goldfish for the first few hours for distress. If serious distress is in order do a water change immediately.

When you add the chemical in the water in your goldfish aquarium at the beginning you will see it turn the water like blue or slight green colour. After a little while the water will return to its normal colour. Make sure you keep a chart on when you began medication and date of when the treatment for ich will end. One of the biggest things people need to do when treating ich ( Ichthyophthirius multifiliis – white spot disease ), goldfish diseases or other external parasites in their aquarium or pond is to make sure you have maximum aeration. When using chemicals for treatments it takes the oxygen out of the water. You need to make sure maximum air and oxygen is available for your goldfish. Melachite green is the most widely used medication used world wide and most effective method of treatment for goldfish ich disease and will get your goldfish health back to normal. Another ich treatment medication alternative would be Kordon Aquarium Rid Ich Preventative which contains melachite green.
